Notes from the Board Meeting - 8/26/2025

At the last FMSD Board meeting on 8/12/2025 items of interest were presented and voted on:

  • Consent Item 7.04 "Authorization to Establish a Blanket Purchase Order with Pearson for Special Education Assessment Materials for School Psychologists" I requested to have this item pulled to question the fiscal irresponsibility of FMSD issuing a blank check to anyone!

  • Consent Item 8.01 "Ratification of 2025-2026 Contract with Kinship Academy, Non-Public School (NPS)" I requested to have this item pulled because it would mean spending $205,587.50 for one (1) student to be placed in a NPS. My objection was there must be a less expensive way for FMSD to provide this child needed service in our schools.

The other Board members were ready to vote in the Affirmative for ALL 16 Consent Items on the Agenda without discussion. Most of the Consent Items involved spending FMSD monies.

We should be looking for every mean possible to be more frugal and responsible in our spending with a projected 9 million dollar deficit and a negative Reserve balance in 2026-2027!

** At this Board Meeting, I requested from the Superintendent that he provide a list of FMSD students who are in Non-Public Schools (NPS) outside of our school district. He provided the list to me:

    • 2 Third graders: $355,687.00

    • 2 Sixth graders: $255,171.50

    • 5 Seventh graders: $650,446.50

    • 2 Eighth graders: $138,093.00

    • Total 11 students: $1,399,398.00

Marc Cooper for Franklin McKinley School Board 2026

After teaching in the public school system for the past 22 years, I have sadly recognized that children are being promoted to high school unprepared to succeed academically. I am running for Franklin-McKinley School District Board to have an impact on the preparation of kindergarten through 8th grade students to succeed in high school.
